Paul Tully
Director of Training

Paul Tully is principal consultant for Newbubbles Ltd and editor of its termly Grade 1 Journal. He has worked as a teacher trainer, staff development manager, quality manager, head of department and consultant in further education colleges for the last 18 years, and is currently studying for a PhD in Education at the University of Brighton. He formed Newbubbles Ltd in 2010 with a small handful of likeminded educators to promote the continuing interests of Further Education colleges and the many thousands of dedicated teachers who form its backbone.

Geoff Petty is the author of the best selling textbook 'Teaching Today: A Practical Guide’, 4th Edition, Nelson Thornes and the UK’s top training guru on expert learning, creativity and evidence-based teaching methods. His seminars have attained an almost legendary status for their imagination, artistry and enthusiasm — working in over 200 Colleges and helping thousands of teachers to create better learning experiences. Geoff is currently working on the 2nd edition of his textbook 'Evidence-Based Teaching'.

Bradley Lightbody

Bradley Lightbody is the author of the best selling textbook 'Outstanding Teaching and Learning 14-19' (2nd edition) which details leading academic, OFSTED and professional guidance on how to deliver teaching and learning to OFSTED Grade 1 standards. Bradley is currently the Managing Director of Collegenet.co.uk, a past OFSTED inspector, Head of Teacher training, Director of Sixth Form and Director of Quality. Bradley has also published books on History and written for the BBC History website. His latest textbook is ’The iLearning Revolution: A New Pedagogy’. Bradley is considered to be one of FE’s leading exponents on how to achieve grade 1 in the classroom.

Trevor Gordon

Trevor Gordon is one of Newbubbles's principal experts on equality and diversity and has a national reputation as a dynamic and high calibre staff trainer and education management consultant. He has supported more than 300 Further Education and public sector organisations in England, Wales and the Channel Islands in raising standards of teaching, learning, management and student support. He is also the author of the D2O management development programme for improving teaching performance across curriculum teams. Trevor is a former Vice Principal and received the Stephen Lawrence Award in 2002 for services to education.

Joanne Miles

Joanne Miles is a teacher, trainer, coach and educational consultant who has led on numerous innovation projects and supported successful colleges in similar projects across the UK. She works closely with Geoff Petty to promote and showcase good practice in evidence-based teaching, supported experiments and solutions-focused coaching. Joanne has spent 20 years working in FE in both management and CPD roles and has significant experience of developing practical approaches to English and functional skills development.

Tony Davis

Tony Davis is Director of the Centre for Creative Quality Improvement. A former lead inspector with the ALI and Ofsted, he also managed the inspectorates’ Preparing for Inspection events and the Good Practice Database. He has developed a number of key quality improvement strategies including: HoT Learning, the Data Springboard and Live Self Assessment, and in 2013 produced the sector’s first Quality Standards for college and work-based provision. Following a successful career as a composer and performer, Tony is now an accomplished film maker with over 40 FE-based credits, including: ArtsWork, and Excellence in the Arts: Beyond the comfort zone.

Helen Groves

Helen Groves is an inspector and has worked in education for over 40 years. Her career has spanned teaching in secondary schools, 6th Form colleges, FE, HE, and community based education. Helen held senior management positions in education for more than 28 years, including Deputy Principal in a Beacon FE college and later CEO of an adult and community learning consortium delivering across Yorkshire and the Humber. She was first appointed as an associate inspector in 1993 and continues to work as an OFSTED inspector in FE & 6th Form colleges, ACL providers, private training, prisons & Job Centre Plus provision.

Richard Moore

Richard Moore has 14 years’ experience as a full-time inspector for the Adult Learning Inspectorate and then OFSTED. Until October 2015, he was a lead inspector for OFSTED in FE inspections, with specialisms in leading colleges, WBL and community learning, amongst many others. One of his principal activities as an inspector was to support colleges in ‘requires improvement’, something that he continues to do as an independent consultant. He has previously worked in ‘outstanding’ colleges to senior management level, and before this, in 5-star luxury hotels such as the Savoy, Claridges and Gleneagles.

Dave Baber

Dave Baber is an additional inspector employed by Serco to carry out Further Education and Skills inspections on behalf of OFSTED in General Further Education Colleges, Work-based Learning, Offender Learning and Adult and Community Learning providers. His inspection specialisms include Apprenticeships, Construction, Auto, Engineering and Initial Teacher Education. David has been a senior manager in further education colleges and the manager of a work-based learning provider delivering apprenticeship and DWP contracts. An apprentice and gas engineer originally, he progressed to lecturing in engineering and construction before lecturing in teacher education.

Mike Davis

Michael Davis has been a full-time inspector for 14 years and until 31st January 2013, he was Principal Officer for Further Education at OFSTED with responsibility for inspector training and developing the Common Inspection Framework 2012 for post-16 education. Mike is an authority on inspecting Outcomes for Learners and Leadership & Management. Prior to OFSTED, Mike worked for ALI and the FEFC, and has over 20 years in teaching and management roles in schools and colleges. This includes a Vice-Principal in one of the largest FE colleges in South East England. He currently works as a learning & skills consultant.

Phil Hatton

Phil Hatton is OFSTED’s former sector subject area adviser for Hair and Beauty and Hospitality and Catering. He has extensive inspection experience with the Further Education Funding Council, the Training Standards Council and the Adult Learning Inspectorate before joining OFSTED. Originally a scientist, Phil got involved in Hair and Beauty through teaching H&B students trichology and science. He wrote the first National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in 1987 and six textbooks. Previously, he was Education Chair and Senior Examiner for the Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene. Phil now works as a consultant on FE inspections.

Sean Hanan

Sean Hanan worked for Ofsted as an HMI (Her Majesty’s Inspector) for ten years until May 2013, leading inspections of FE colleges and secondary schools. He was also responsible for setting up and managing the production of good practice case studies that have been published by Ofsted since 2011. Prior to that, he worked in a school and a number of colleges in teaching, management and senior management roles. He has particular skills in using lesson observations to improve teaching and learning, and interpreting and using performance data effectively.

Terry Sharrock

Terry Sharrock is a qualified teacher and Associate Inspector for OFSTED in Maths & English. He has taught literacy and numeracy in schools, colleges and adult and community learning for over 30 years. In the last 15 years he has been a successful consultant supporting schools and colleges in the embedding of Maths, English & Functional Skills in both academic and vocational/ WBL programmes. This has included observing and developing staff skills and creating materials for curriculum teams. Terry works as a principal examiner for functional skills for a leading award body, presents regularly at conferences on Maths & English and is considered to be one of the UK's leading experts in literacy/numeracy in 14-19 and 19+ provision.

John Perry

She is an expert in management development programmes which include accredited programmes such as the Institute for Leadership & Management (ILM) awards. She has also supported numerous organisations in their successful achievement of Investors In People and the MATRIX Award for advice & guidance.

Julian Appleyard

Julian Appleyard is the Founding Principal of Rochdale Sixth Form College and joined the college from New College, Pontefract where he was Deputy Principal. Julian started his career as Business Studies and Economics teacher, and has worked in two 11-18 comprehensive schools, one as Deputy Head teacher. He worked for a number of years at Greenhead College, a large 6FC where he helped develop their nationally commended pastoral system. Having been headhunted to work with ALPs (Advanced Level Performance Systems) as Director of Education, Julian worked with schools and colleges throughout England to improve A-level achievement and value-added performance using the ALPs processes. He is a popular speaker at post-16 conferences.

Andry Anastasiou is an experienced teacher, executive coach and facilitator, a Fierce Conversations facilitator and educational consultant. Andry has worked with educational organisations for over 20 years, enabling them to improve performance, enhance teaching and learning and develop successful managers, teachers and teams. Andry is skilled in working on: management and leadership, mentoring and executive coaching and staff coaching, engaging creative teaching and learning. She is a full member of the Association for Coaching. She has previously worked as a Senior Lecturer, teacher, assessor and teacher trainer. She also has over 800 hours of coaching and team coaching experience and is qualified with ILM as a coach and mentor.

Abbie Clay

Abbie Clay is a nationally respected expert in Safeguarding and the Government’s Prevent strategy, and her work has been commended by OFSTED in numerous inspection reports. She regularly presents at national and international conferences on Equality & Diversity, Fundamental British Values, the Implementation of PREVENT, safeguarding, student engagement and personal welfare. Abby has 30 years working in schools and the FHE sector, and 10 years as a senior manager. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

James Houston is an inspector and experienced senior manager with a background in Further Education and Work Based Learning. His inspection experience includes Further Education colleges and independent work based learning providers mainly inspecting construction, and occasionally in engineering, equality & diversity and quality assurance. James is a former National Subject Lead for Construction in the FE & Skills sector and has almost 10 years’ FE experience as a Head of Construction, Head of Faculty and Business Director.

Dr Jonathan Tummons

Dr Jonathan Tummons is a highly well-regarded trainer, researcher and author in the area of assessment for learning and teaching HE in FE. He is currently lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Durham, where he also works as pathway leader for the MSc in Educational Assessment. He has previously worked as a teacher educator in a range of further and higher education institutions, as a co-convenor for a university-led education and work-based learning research unit and he is a member of the editorial board for Research In Post-Compulsory Education. Jonathan’s long list of book and article credentials include the popular Assessing Learning in the Lifelong Learning Sector (2011) and co-authoring the 7th edition of Curzon’s classic textbook Teaching In Further Education (2014).

Ben Beaumont

Ben Beaumont is an experienced teacher educator and assessor with extensive experience supporting teachers in a wide variety of contexts in the UK and overseas. Having developed both generic and English language teacher education programmes for ITE and in-service CPD, Ben is an expert in the developing English skills in the FE curriculum. His doctoral work on CPD support for teachers working with non-native speakers, amongst his many achievements, led to him being awarded the 2015 University of Westminster’s teaching fellowship for outstanding teaching and learning. Ben has occupied curriculum leadership and management roles including the ITE team in a large FE college, and is now the teaching qualifications manager of an international examinations board. His consultancy interests also include the effective use of formative and summative assessment, peer observation, metacognition and better ways of supporting study skills.

Kayte Haselgrove

Kayte Haselgrove is an expert in developing English & Maths skills and has supported numerous colleges to improve teachers’ confidence and skills in literacy and numeracy. She has been a Subject Leader and Advanced Practitioner with oversight of English and Maths curriculum areas in a large FE college, with success rates in excess of 90% in 2012/13 and 2013/14, and 100% pass rates in Functional & GCSE English. Kayte provides expert coaching in English to FE vocational staff, GCSE teams and Functional English to FE colleges across the UK, from bespoke CPD sessions that help teachers support learners with their re-sit qualifications to whole-college mock inspection exercises in English & Maths. She has also written and delivered a ‘Level 3 Award in Promoting English and Maths in Teaching and Learning', designed to transform the capability of FE teachers to deliver functional English & Maths which is available to FE Colleges on request. Kate also advises on equality & diversity and PREVENT.
