PRESS RELEASE: Our forthcoming National FE conference entitled “Leading Further Education” on 21st March 2014 in Guildford promises to be a truly spectacular line-up of national and international experts and speakers on FE leadership and performance. Keynotes from OFSTED's Matthew Coffey, Toni Fazaeli of the IfL, Professor Helen Colley of Huddersfield University, International speaker Professor David Clutterbuck and TV Celebrity and Maths guru Johnny Ball will provide a robust, provocative debate on the leadership of FE colleges, the advance of the measurement agenda, transformational maths & thinking strategies and the development of sustainable cultures of excellence. The complexity of FE leadership is placed into sharp context against a precarious economic backdrop, the marginalisation of trade unions, falling salaries, changes in the vocational and apprenticeship curriculums and the uncertain effects of de-regulation on teacher training. Lingfield (2012) commented on a ‘strain of fearfulness’ exhibited by some teachers and managers who work in Further Education. This conference intends to expose and render visible these issues for public debate, and in doing so, expects to make a serious contribution to the recognition and establishment of new forms of FE leadership and management.
The title of the conference is called: “Leading Further Education” which aims to stimulate discussion about how best to develop an entrepreneurial culture in what has typically been a volaatile and risk averse education sector. We are keen to promote a synergy between business and post-compulsory education practices, to radicalise and transform the culture of further education to one that is innovative, creative, responsive and business-minded.
